Boxes

This is a 1pt box. Used for things like pull-out quotes.

When using copy in a box make sure it is inset by one or two points to prevent the words from sitting up against the box sides.

This is a 3pt box. Used for longer pieces of text such as Fact Files.

Even more important to make sure the copy is inset from the edge.

This is a 6pt box. Use when the text is larger than normal body copy.

The use of heavily ruled boxes can detract from the content.

This can be minimized by using percentages.

This is a 6pt box at 50% tint.

Underscore

A line under text . Use only for emphasis, and sparingly - especially in body copy.

Resist underscoring each word individually. It can be very distracting.

Remember that people read by looking at the tops of letters.

WOBS, WOTS and BOTS

WOB - stands for White on Black - otherwise know as a Reverse.

Originally used as contrast before newspapers had as much colour as they do today. Still useful to draw attention to a story, but too many WOBS can make a page look dark and intimidating.

WOT - Stands for White on Tint (or Tone). Like tthe WOB but the background is reduced to varying shades of grey by using percentages.

BOT - stand for Black on Tint (or Tone). Like the Wot but the text is black.

Only Sans faces should be used for WOBS, WOTS and BOTS as the serifs tend to look muddy.
